How to create a classroom seating plan with Classroomscreen

7 min

In this guide, we'll explore various seating arrangements, their advantages and disadvantages, and how you can implement them using Classroomscreen's tools.

Why seating plans matter

An effective classroom seating plan improves focus, classroom management, collaboration, and even learning outcomes. Whether you're arranging your desks for group work, minimizing distractions, or supporting differentiated instruction, your layout matters.

With Classroomscreen’s Seating chart maker template and the new Seating Plan sticker sheet, you can now visualize, create, and customize your classroom layout quickly and interactively - no spreadsheet required!

What you’ll need

Before we begin, here’s what you’ll use:

  • Seating plan sticker sheet (40+ classroom-themed stickers)
  • Group maker to automatically assign students to tables
  • Randomizer for random seat selection
  • Text/Annotation widget or adding names

tip:

You can access ready-made classroom layouts and all necessary widgets in our Seating chart maker template (it's free!)

Paired rows

Ideal for test days, reading time, or pair activities.

How to build it:

  1. Use the Group Maker to create pairs (groups of 2).
  2. Use Seating Plan stickers to arrange desks in neat paired rows. Add icons for your teacher desk, whiteboard, and rug area
  3. Drag and drop student names using the Annotation tool or name label stickers

Making rows with our random name generator

To use this seating arrangement in Classroomscreen, you can use two Randomizer widgets to act as random name pickers. Simply add the students' names to one of them, along with another containing a list of numbers (1,2,3,4) up to how many tables you have.

Activate both widgets, so that a student is called along with a number which will be their desk - such as Annabel, 4. Keep randomizing using both widgets until everyone has a seat!

Table groups

Perfect for cooperative learning, centers, or project-based activities.

How to build it:

  1. Add your full student list to the Group maker and divide them into however many tables you have (we had 7 in our screen).
  2. Use the sticker icons to label each group (e.g. Group A, B, etc.) or Text widgets grouped to the stickers.

example:

Combine this with a task list widget so each table sees their responsibilities.

Flexible seating

Great for classrooms with beanbags, floor seating, or rotation stations.

How to build it:

  1. Add your student names to the cute heart labels ahead of time.
  2. Drag and drop these labels to different zones: couches, floor cushions, standing desks, or tables.
  3. You can mix zones based on activity, energy levels, or learning preferences.

tip:

Let students self-select zones for certain activities and drag their own names!

Build your own

Use this blank screen in our template to design your classroom from scratch.

How to use it:

  1. Drag and drop all the furniture you need to create your classroom.
  2. Once your space is built, use text boxes or stickers to add student names.
  3. Reorganize furniture anytime by dragging and adjusting as needed.

Modify and save your layouts

You can duplicate any screen, adjust it for different class periods or activities, and save it to your Dashboard to reuse all year long if you have a Pro account.
